Primary 2022: SEIU Congratulates Endorsed Champions Up and Down the Ballot

May 18, 2022

Harrisburg - Today, the SEIU Pennsylvania State Council congratulated endorsed pro-worker champions on hard fought campaigns and election night victories.

For Immediate Release:

“SEIU works to secure the future for our 80,000 members in Pennsylvania and ensure every Pennsylvanian -- Black, brown or white -- who wants to join or form a union has that right,” said Matt Yarnell, Secretary Treasurer of the SEIU Pennsylvania State Council and President of SEIU Healthcare PA.  “SEIU members endorse champions who will stand with us in expanding union rights, not just defending the status quo.  In this primary election, we are proud to have stood with them.”

Governor & Lt. Governor

At the top of the ticket, SEIU congratulates endorsed champions Josh Shapiro and Austin Davis. Please see the election night press release on the stakes of the gubernatorial race, SEIU’s top political priority.

U.S. Senate

“SEIU was honored to support the Senate run of Malcolm Kenyatta. He ran a historic campaign and inspired supporters across the commonwealth by centering his message on racial and worker justice. We will keep fighting together for Pennsylvania’s working families,” said Gabe Morgan, President of the SEIU Pennsylvania State Council and Vice President of SEIU 32BJ.  “We congratulate Lt. Governor John Fetterman on his commanding victory, and we know that because of his fierce support of union members and not-yet union workers, we will prevail in November.”

Down Ballot

Twenty-Four of 25 SEIU endorsed down ballot candidates prevailed on Tuesday with one race too close to call --  proving once again that SEIU members are a premier force in Pennsylvania politics.

“SEIU members know that just like one vote can make the difference in an election, one vote can make the difference in Congress or the Statehouse,” said Steve Catanese, President of SEIU Local 668.  “SEIU members came out in force to knock doors, make calls, send texts, and donate voluntary contributions to our political action fund to ensure candidates aligned on our values dominated Tuesday night.  We are thrilled to work with these candidates to ensure Unions for All in Pennsylvania and across the country.”
