SEIU Pennsylvania State Council Endorses Michael Nutter for Mayor

Tuesday, October 09, 2007

October 9, 2007 – Citing his support of working families and ambitious vision for Philadelphia’s future, the Pennsylvania State Council of the Service Employees International Union endorsed Michael Nutter today at a press conference in Center City.

“Philadelphia is ready to move in a new direction, and Michael Nutter is ready to take it there,” said State Council Executive Director Eileen Connelly. “His commitment to supporting working families by creating a climate for economic growth, making government more transparent and responsive, and ending the homicide epidemic that has plagued this city have earned our respect and support.”

SEIU PA member Kirk Shelton, a building cleaner for One Source, said, “One of our members said recently, ‘What good is a living wage, health benefits and a pension if we get shot on the way home from work?’…That is why SEIU members need strong leadership in City Hall. We need a mayor who will stand with us both as union members, and as citizens of this city. And that’s why we are endorsing Michael Nutter today.”

Nutter said, “I am proud to have the endorsement of the SEIU Pennsylvania State Council, one of the most politically active unions in the state. I look forward to working together on all of the tough issues that face working Philadelphians.”

Other speakers at the press conference included George Ricchezza, President of Local 1201; Jesse Wilderman, Executive Vice-President of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania; Rose Holloway, retired member of Local 668; and Wayne MacManiman, District Supervisor of Local 32BJ.
